Advanced Actors
Feature Film Actor's Lab
Peter Kelley

This intensive, 3-part, 9-hour workshop is designed to provide a complete experience of creating a film performance while revealing the secrets of how to best make the filmmaking process work for the actor. Part one focuses on the choice making process and how the actor guides him or her self into the text. The scenes are shot during part two: the work is fast and rigorous, two takes per scene, one close-up per actor. in part three the the footage is viewed and critqued with both a directors and editor's eye.

Through a combination of intensive rehearsal work and different shooting, editing, and projection techniques, these workshops offer the actor the unique opportunity to work in an on-set environment -- and then see the work, edited.

Actors will gain a firsthand understanding of what choices work best for the camera, and how and why certain takes are chosen -- and performances created -- over others.

This is an exceptional opportunity for the serious film actor.

Early registration recommended as enrollment is limited

THE 3-PART STRUCTURE: WORK, SHOOT, WATCH

PART 1: SCENES ARE WORKED. [SATURDAY]
Actors are expected to arrive the the first session rehearsed and as off-book as possible. (Actors will receive a scene and scene partner contact information by (approx.) the Wednesday before the class.) Scenes are worked primarily face-to-face. We explore:
• breaking down the script and the choice-making process for film.
• the actors' ability to commit truthfully to the script, their partners, their choices.

PART 2: SCENES ARE SHOT. [SUNDAY AM]
• Actors show their scene "on its feet" with blocking and activity.
• Actors work with the instructor on prop and staging modifications necessary to shoot the scene.
• Each scene is shot twice, one close-up per actor.

PART 3: SCENES ARE VIEWED. [SUNDAY PM]
Takes are screened, highlighting issues including:
• continuity, usability, relationships between choice and shot.
• Individual feedback focusing on topics including the commitment to choices, understood thought, how the actor is working with the shot to maximize performance, and much more.

THE TRAINING WILL FOCUS ON:

* rigorous, text-based scene work chosen from the best of contemporary American film (occasionally theatre).
* the difference between what's crucial to establish in rehearsal for film and what cannot be established in a film rehearsal.
* the importance of absolute personal honesty in this medium.
* how to work freely within the pressures and restrictions of the shooting environment.

THE TRAINING WILL NOT FOCUS ON:

* character work; improvisation; dialect; voice; movement.

A FEW TIPS:

* The more work put in prior to session 1, the better the actor's overall experience will be.
* Actors need not be overly intricate when staging their scenes. Simplest is often best.
* Prop and independent activity work, however, should be specific and revealing.

Prerequisite: Previous acting experience/training required.

Here's what some former students have said about Peter Kelley:

-----

"Thank you for helping me to summon some of the most stimulating moments of my life in pursuit of a thrilling dream. Bravo. Really." – Andrew Syek

"Peter Kelley is the most gifted teacher of any kind that I have ever had in my entire life. His dedication to his profession is remarkable. I began my acting career late in life but thanks to Peter I have made amazing progress and have enjoyed considerable success in Boston and New York both in film and in theater." – Dave Dwyer

"I have known Peter for over ten years and feel he is an incredibly talented director/acting coach. Whether it be preparing for an audition or developing a character for a specific role, I have been able to count on Peter for great advice and ideas." – Chris O'Donnell

"Peter works harder at what he does than anyone I know... it means so much to have someone who really knows and cares. Thank you, Peter, for all the help." – Eliza Dushku

"Peter Kelley is, without doubt, the best acting coach that I have ever had. Because of him, I have achieved a level of honesty and truthfulness in my work that I had been previously unable to reach. He has the uncanny knack of drawing out of an actor his/her true self, by showing what is real, and by helping one to disregard any of those things which usually confuse and blind one to simply 'being.' He does this by guiding the actor to discover that truth themselves, instead of merely presenting the answer. The dedicated actor, armed with this newfound awareness, is therefore able to grow and expand upon their craft exponentially." – Jennifer Queirejiero
